Humanitarian hardship and persecution are the main reasons why people flee their homes. Around 114 million people were on the run at the end of 2023.At least 8,565 people died on international migration routes that year, making it the deadliest year for migrants since 2014.As safe migration routes are always limited, hundreds of thousands of people try to migrate via irregular routes under unsafe conditions. More than half of the deaths were the result of drowning, with routes across the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the English Channel or the Caribbean being particularly dangerous.
